Perinatal Mental Health is the second leading indirect cause of maternal mortality in the UK preceded by heart disease. The relative proportions and the absolute numbers are on the increase and are higher than several direct causes of maternal death. This incidence is similar in many developed countries. The mortality is the tip of the ice berg. The number of women affected by morbidity may be much greater. The condition may affect their marital, sexual and working life in addition to their ability to care for their children. The condition has several grades from mild to severe. Some mothers who are prone to the condition can be identified and measures can be taken to prevent it or to detect it early and treat in order to avoid the adverse consequences.

The pre congress study day on Psychiatric Problems in Pregnancy (organised jointly by The American College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, Royal Colleges of General Practitioners, Psychiatrists, Midwives, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the CMACE) will discuss the advances in genetic research and newer pharmacological and counselling interventions. This new knowledge should be of immense value to care givers to reduce morbidity and mortality due to perinatal mental health.
